Former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially announced his intention to contest for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), signaling a bold step into the party’s upcoming leadership race.

The renowned educationist and lawmaker, who served as Education Minister under the Akufo-Addo administration until early 2025, made his declaration during a press interaction in Accra, affirming his readiness to lead the party and Ghana into a new era of transformation and innovation.

“I’m ready to lead. My experience in education reform, my commitment to development, and my passion for service have prepared me for this moment,” Dr. Adutwum stated. “I will present myself when the party officially opens nominations, and I will do so with a clear vision for a prosperous Ghana.”

His announcement adds a significant name to the growing list of potential aspirants expected to contest for the NPP’s top slot as the party prepares for its internal elections ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Known for his technocratic approach and reform-minded policies in the education sector, Dr. Adutwum has earned a reputation as a results-driven leader. He championed key reforms such as the expansion of STEM education and the operationalization of the Free Senior High School policy.

His supporters argue that his background as an educator, entrepreneur, and public servant offers the NPP a unique candidate capable of uniting the party and appealing to Ghana’s youthful electorate.

Political analysts view his entry as a game-changer, potentially appealing to both grassroots and intellectual blocs within the party. However, he is expected to face stiff competition from other seasoned party figures also eyeing the flagbearer slot.

The NPP has officially announced 31st January 2026 will be date of election for its internal presidential primaries, but the party leadership has indicated that consultations are ongoing for the date of opening of nominations.

As the race begins to take shape, Dr. Adutwum’s declaration is likely to stir conversations across political circles, setting the tone for what is expected to be a highly contested and strategic race within the ruling party.
