NPP Bars National Security from Presidential Primary, Assigns Exclusive Security Role to Police

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has firmly declared that the Ghana Police Service will be the sole security agency responsible for maintaining law and order during its Presidential Primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

In a strongly worded statement issued by the Party through its Presidential Elections Committee, the NPP stated that it will not tolerate the presence or activities of any non-uniformed, plain-clothed, or unauthorised security personnel, particularly operatives affiliated with National Security or any other institution, at voting centres, collation points, or any event connected to the conduct of the primary.

According to the Party, intelligence available to it suggests that some elements within National Security may be planning to deploy unauthorised operatives during the election.

The NPP warned that any such deployment would be considered a deliberate and unlawful intrusion into the Party’s internal democratic processes, with the potential to disrupt or manipulate the outcome of the election.

“The Party states unequivocally that it will not tolerate the presence, deployment, or activities of any unauthorised security personnel,” the statement emphasized.

The NPP further cautioned that it would not hesitate to invoke all lawful remedies available to protect the integrity of the process. Any unauthorised presence, the Party stressed, would be challenged and resisted strictly within the bounds of the law.

The Party expressed confidence in the professionalism and capacity of the Ghana Police Service, noting that the Police have demonstrated sufficient competence to handle security arrangements for the exercise.

It therefore expects the Service to enforce the directive without compromise and to ensure that only duly authorised and clearly identifiable police officers are deployed throughout the process, in line with assurances already given.

The statement was signed by the National Organizer of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, who reaffirmed the Party’s commitment to a free, fair, and transparent presidential primary, conducted without intimidation or external interference.
