President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has issued a crucial call to action to Ghanaian journalists, urging them to prioritize truth and accuracy in their reporting, especially as the 2024 general elections approach. Speaking at the 28th Ghana Journalists Association’s Media Awards and 75th anniversary in Accra on September 28, he emphasized the vital role journalists play in shaping Ghana’s democracy.
Akufo-Addo cautioned against the dangers of misinformation, disinformation, and sensationalism, which can compromise the electoral process.
He encouraged journalists to be gatekeepers of truth, ensuring facts prevail over falsehoods, particularly in the digital age where information spreads rapidly.
“The responsibility of the media during elections cannot be overstated,” Akufo-Addo stressed. “You have been at the forefront, monitoring polls, reporting on potential irregularities, and ensuring that the voices of the electorates are heard. Peaceful transitions of power that we have been seeing in Ghana are no small part due to the diligence and integrity of the media.”
The President acknowledged the media’s indispensable role in past elections, monitoring polls, reporting irregularities, and amplifying voters’ voices.
He credited the media for promoting peaceful transitions of power in Ghana.
However, Akufo-Addo noted that the digital age presents new challenges. “Times are changing, and we face many new challenges – disinformation, misinformation, fake news, and sensationalism that can distort the electoral process. While technology has democratized information, it has also created new vulnerabilities.”
In light of these challenges, Akufo-Addo urged journalists to rise to the occasion. “In the age of social media, where information travels faster than ever, journalists must be the gatekeepers of truth, ensuring that facts prevail over falsehoods. As we prepare for another election cycle, I call on the media to continue its vital work, reporting with integrity, ensuring fairness in coverage, and providing voters with accurate, timely, and comprehensive information they need to make informed decisions.”
Akufo-Addo stressed the high stakes for accurate and balanced reporting, emphasizing that journalists’ work is essential to Ghana’s democracy, election integrity, and national progress.
He reaffirmed his commitment to a free and vibrant press, highlighting his government’s efforts to advance press freedom, including passing the Right to Information Act and repealing the Criminal Libel Law.
“I remain deeply committed to ensuring that the media in Ghana remains free, vibrant, and independent,” Akufo-Addo declared. “Your work is essential to the strength of our democracy, the integrity of our elections, and the progress of our nation.”
As Ghana prepares for the 2024 elections, Akufo-Addo’s message serves as a powerful reminder of the media’s responsibility in shaping the country’s democratic future.
The President’s call to action underscores the importance of ethical journalism in promoting transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making.
By emphasizing the critical role of journalists, Akufo-Addo’s speech reinforced the notion that a free press is essential to Ghana’s democratic development.
As the nation moves forward, the media’s commitment to truth, accuracy, and fairness will remain vital in shaping Ghana’s electoral landscape.
