The Ghana Federation of Labour has issued a dire and urgent warning to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, imploring him to take immediate and decisive action to address the escalating and rampant issue of illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The Federation warns that failure to act swiftly and decisively will inevitably result in a catastrophic socio-economic and environmental crisis, with far-reaching consequences for the nation.
Kenneth Koomson, Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, emphasized the devastating and detrimental impacts of galamsey on the environment, including widespread deforestation, severe water pollution, and irreversible land degradation.
He stressed that these destructive activities not only threaten the livelihoods and well-being of local communities but also pose significant risks to public health and the nation’s long-term economic stability and sustainability.
Mr. Koomson passionately called for comprehensive and decisive measures to combat galamsey, stating, “We must come together as a nation to urge the President to take just, constitutional, and honest actions to save Ghana from imminent collapse, destruction, and decimation of our people, which could lead to civil disorder and chaos.”
He further emphasized the extreme urgency of the situation, saying, “If we don’t take swift and drastic action, we risk losing our lands, livelihoods, and survival.
Everything that Ghanaians live for, our very existence, and our future will be destroyed by galamsey if we don’t act quickly and decisively. The consequences of inaction will be catastrophic, and we cannot afford to wait any longer.”
