Kotoko Coach Defends Penalty Call in FA Cup Final Victory

Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has defended the controversial penalty that handed his side a narrow victory over Golden Kick Sporting Club in the 2025 MTN FA Cup final.

The decisive moment came late in the second half when the referee awarded a penalty to Kotoko amid protests from Golden Kick players and officials, who argued that the call was both soft and delayed. However, Coach Zito insists the decision was justified.

“The referee whistled late but it doesn’t mean it was not a penalty,” Zito stated in his post-match comments. “The contact was clear. Sometimes referees take a moment to be sure. It was the right call.”

The incident has sparked debate across the football landscape, with many questioning the timing and clarity of the decision. Golden Kick head coach Nii Parker Hanson has since been charged by the GFA Disciplinary Committee for his own critical remarks about the officiating.

Despite the controversy, Kotoko’s win secures their place in continental competition and adds another FA Cup title to their illustrious history. Zito praised his players for their resilience and focus, saying, “We knew it would be a tough game. Credit to Golden Kick, but we earned this win.”

The Ghana Football Association is yet to comment on the referee’s performance, but the incident is expected to be reviewed internally.
