Liverpool Football Club has announced that the iconic number 20 shirt worn by the late Diogo Jota will be permanently retired in his honour, following the tragic death of the Portuguese forward in a car accident early Thursday morning.

Jota, 28, passed away alongside his younger brother, André, after their vehicle veered off the A-52 highway in Spain’s Zamora province and burst into flames. The news has sent shockwaves through the football world, prompting an outpouring of grief from teammates, fans, and clubs globally.

In a heartfelt statement released today, Liverpool FC confirmed that no player will wear the No. 20 shirt again — a tribute meant to immortalize Jota’s contribution to the club and the indelible mark he left on Anfield.

“Diogo was more than just a player; he was family,” the club wrote. “His energy, humility, and relentless drive inspired everyone around him. To honour his memory and legacy, the No. 20 shirt will be retired. Diogo Jota will always be part of our story — forever.”

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a €44.7 million move and quickly established himself as a fan favourite. In 182 appearances for the Reds, he scored 65 goals and provided 26 assists. He played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s recent successes, including their 2024-25 Premier League title triumph and domestic cup double in the 2021-22 season.

The Portuguese international was renowned not only for his goal-scoring prowess and versatility but also for his quiet leadership and professionalism on and off the pitch.

Tributes continue to pour in from across the footballing world. Liverpool supporters have begun laying flowers and scarves at Anfield’s Shankly Gates, while the club is reportedly planning a special memorial ceremony ahead of their next fixture.

The decision to retire Jota’s shirt number underscores the magnitude of his impact on Liverpool and the deep sense of loss felt throughout the club and its global community.

As Liverpool prepares to honour him, one message resonates across Merseyside and beyond:
Diogo Jota, No. 20 — forever in our hearts.
