Next NDC govt will tackle galamsey with responsible mining policies – Opoku-Agyemang

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reaffirmed her party’s commitment to tackling the pervasive issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which has left a trail of devastation on many water bodies and rivers across Ghana.

During her recent tour of the Western and Central Regions, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that the next NDC government will prioritize the implementation of policies designed to ensure responsible mining practices that create jobs for the youth without harming the environment.

In stark contrast to the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, which has faced widespread criticism for its inability to effectively combat galamsey, the NDC plans to modify the trade to benefit local communities.

This approach is underpinned by the party’s unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility and good governance.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed that the NDC will not appoint individuals involved in galamsey to public office, underscoring the party’s dedication to upholding the highest standards of integrity and transparency.

The NDC’s innovative 24-hour economy policy aims to create employment opportunities for those who cannot engage in galamsey, while also supporting existing businesses to employ more people and operate on a 24-hour system.

This multifaceted approach is expected to stimulate economic growth, reduce poverty, and diminish the allure of illegal mining.

In addition to its comprehensive plan to address galamsey, the NDC has an impressive track record in healthcare infrastructure development. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang proudly highlighted the party’s achievements in this sector, citing the establishment of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho and the University of Development Studies.

She also mentioned the upgrading of healthcare centers and regional hospitals, which has significantly improved access to quality healthcare services for countless Ghanaians. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang challenged the NPP to match these accomplishments, emphasizing the NDC’s unwavering dedication to improving the lives of the Ghanaian people.

The NDC’s vision for Ghana’s future is built on a foundation of sustainability, equity, and progress. By reframing the mining industry and prioritizing environmental responsibility, the party aims to strike a delicate balance between economic growth and sustainability.

As Ghana prepares for the general elections, the NDC’s commitment to addressing galamsey and promoting responsible mining practices has resonated with many voters. The party’s pledge to create jobs, protect the environment, and ensure good governance has instilled hope in the hearts of Ghanaians who are eager for positive change.

The next NDC government’s policies and programs will be guided by the principles of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s message has sent a strong signal that the NDC is poised to deliver a better future for all Ghanaians, where economic growth and environmental sustainability go hand-in-hand.
