The Ghana Police Service has issued a statement clarifying that Gloria Vera Louise, one of the protesters arrested during the Democracy Hub demonstration, is not pregnant, contrary to earlier claims.
This revelation comes after medical examinations were conducted at independent health facilities to verify the allegations.
According to the police, Gloria was reportedly said to be four months pregnant at the time of her arrest and subsequent two-week remand. However, the medical results have confirmed that Gloria is not pregnant.
The police further noted that during her arrest, there were no visible signs of pregnancy. Additionally, Gloria never informed the police or the court of her alleged pregnancy, either personally or through her lawyers.
The police took the initiative to conduct thorough medical examinations to establish the veracity of the claim.
Gloria was sent to both the Police Hospital and an independent health facility for evaluation. Both medical results came out negative, confirming that Gloria is not pregnant.
The Office of the Attorney General had earlier expressed disappointment regarding the failure of Gloria’s lawyers to inform the court about her alleged pregnancy during the bail hearing. This development has raised questions about the accuracy of initial reports.
In a related development, the police have charged Grace Asantewaa with exposing a child to danger by bringing them to the demonstration grounds. This charge is contrary to section 71 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to be mindful of involving children in activities that have the potential to expose them to danger.
This warning comes after the arrest of 54 protesters between September 21 and 23, who face various charges.
The police statement serves as a clarification on the earlier reports surrounding Gloria’s pregnancy. It also underscores the importance of verifying information before dissemination.
As the investigation continues, more details are likely to emerge. The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order while ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
The Democracy Hub demonstration and subsequent arrests have sparked widespread debate on the balance between public order and democratic freedoms. This development highlights the need for accurate information and responsible reporting in sensitive cases.
