Over 60 MPs Storm Bawumia’s Office to Back 2028 Presidential Bid

More than 60 Members of Parliament from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have thrown their weight behind former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging him to contest the party’s flagbearership ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The MPs, representing various constituencies across the country, reportedly convened at Dr. Bawumia’s private office in Accra on Thursday for a high-level, closed-door meeting. The gathering, described by insiders as a show of strategic solidarity, comes at a time when internal conversations within the NPP are intensifying over who should lead the party into the next electoral cycle.

“We believe he remains the best hope for our party’s future, and we are ready to stand firmly behind him,” one of the MPs who attended the meeting disclosed to journalists on condition of anonymity.

Though Dr. Bawumia has not officially declared his intention to run in 2028, Thursday’s meeting is seen as a significant signal of growing grassroots and parliamentary support for his comeback, following the party’s loss in the 2024 elections.

Party insiders say the MPs cited Dr. Bawumia’s vision, digital transformation agenda, and experience in economic management as key reasons for their endorsement.

Political analysts say the former Vice-President remains a formidable force within the NPP and could mount a strong campaign if he chooses to enter the race.

The NPP is expected to open nominations for its 2028 flagbearer race this year and elections will be done on 31st January 2026, but the early movements by influential party figures suggest that the jockeying for leadership has already begun.
