The Ghana Police Service has issued a stern warning to the organizers of the Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey demonstration, scheduled to take place from October 3rd to 5th, 2024.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the police reminded the organizers of their responsibilities under the Public Order Act, emphasizing that they will be held liable for any damage caused to public property during the demonstration.
According to the statement, the police engaged with the organizers prior to the demonstration, reminding them of their duties under the Public Order Act.
The Act requires organizers to ensure that participants obey police directions, safeguard the proper movement of other persons and vehicles, and maintain order.
The police statement emphasized that any person taking part in the demonstration must obey police instructions, avoiding obstruction of traffic, confusion, or disorder.
Additionally, the organizers were reminded that they will be held accountable for any damage caused to public property during the event.
The police also outlined their responsibilities under the Public Order Act, which include taking necessary steps to ensure the proper conduct of the demonstration.
This includes directing the routes of the event to prevent obstruction of pedestrian or vehicular traffic, dispersing crowds where a breach of peace is likely to occur or has occurred, and preserving public order.
To achieve this, the police may close streets or parts thereof to pedestrian or vehicular traffic and erect barriers as necessary.
The police emphasized their commitment to maintaining law and order during the demonstration and beyond.
The Ghana Police Service assured the public that sufficient security measures have been put in place to ensure peace and security during the demonstration.
This move comes as the police aim to prevent any potential breaches of peace and ensure a peaceful demonstration.
The demonstration, organized by Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey, aims to bring attention to the issue of illegal mining in Ghana. The event is expected to draw significant attention, and the police are taking proactive measures to ensure public safety and order.
By reminding organizers of their responsibilities and outlining their own duties under the Public Order Act, the Ghana Police Service seeks to maintain a secure and peaceful environment for all citizens.
