In Berlin, Germany – Spain clinched their record fourth European Championship title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final at the Olympiastadion on Sunday.
The match remained goalless in the first half as both teams struggled to create clear chances. England’s defense, led by Luke Shaw, who replaced Kieran Trippier at left-back, successfully contained Spain’s dangerous winger Lamine Yamal.
Spain took the lead shortly after the break. Yamal cut inside from the right and found Nico Williams, who slotted the ball into the far post, putting La Roja ahead. England responded with a swift counterattack with just under 20 minutes left on the clock.
Bukayo Saka’s pace on the right wing set up Jude Bellingham, who unselfishly laid the ball off for Cole Palmer to score the equalizer from the edge of the box.
As the match neared its conclusion, Spain struck the decisive blow. In the final five minutes, Marc Cucurella’s cross found Mikel Oyarzabal, whose first-time finish beat Jordan Pickford, restoring Spain’s lead.
England came close to leveling the score in a frantic last attack. Declan Rice’s header from a corner was saved by Unai Simon, Marc Guehi’s follow-up was cleared off the line by Dani Olmo, and Rice’s subsequent attempt went wide.
Spain held on through four minutes of added time to secure the victory and be crowned champions of Europe. This win adds a fourth European Championship title to Spain’s trophy cabinet, further cementing their legacy in European football.
For England, the wait for a major trophy continues, with their last triumph being the FIFA World Cup in 1966.
