The Wa Circuit Court has sentenced 19-year-old Adams Hamidu, popularly known as Gyida, to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labor after he was found guilty of robbery.

Gyida was involved in a violent robbery in February 2025, during which he and an accomplice—whose identity remains unknown due to the use of a mask—attacked a victim and made away with valuable items. The items stolen included a blue Honda motorbike valued at GHC 20,000, a Tecno mobile phone worth GHC 1,300, and cash totaling GHC 10,800.

Following the incident, the Upper West Regional Police Command launched an intensive intelligence-led investigation that led to Gyida’s arrest on June 1, 2025, in Domowa, a community in the Wa West District.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence linking Gyida to the crime, and the court, after careful consideration, found him guilty beyond reasonable doubt. The presiding judge, in delivering the sentence, emphasized the seriousness of the offense and the need to deter others from engaging in similar criminal activities.

The case has drawn public attention, with community members and local leaders praising the swift action of the police and the judicial system. Authorities have also appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of Gyida’s accomplice, who is still at large.

The sentencing of Gyida serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in crime, particularly armed robbery, and highlights the commitment of law enforcement agencies in the Upper West Region to maintaining peace and security.
