Asante Kotoko SC has announced the indefinite suspension of all footballing activities following the tragic death of their supporter, Francis Yaw Frimpong, during violent clashes at the Nana Koromansah Park in Nsoatre.

In an official statement, the club expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the incident, describing it as a “senseless murder” that has left the entire Kotoko family heartbroken. The club vowed to seek justice and push for lasting reforms to eradicate violence and hooliganism from Ghanaian football.

Arrests and Police Action

Kotoko welcomed the swift action of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Bono Regional Police Commander, and COP Lydia Donkor, following the arrest of three key suspects in connection with the violence. The club pledged full cooperation with law enforcement to ensure all culprits face the full weight of the law.

Support for the Bereaved Family

The club assured that it is in close communication with the family of Francis Yaw Frimpong, offering them full support. Kotoko will soon announce details of his funeral rites and has called on all football lovers to stand with the grieving family.

Engagement with the GFA and Clubs

Kotoko confirmed it will honor an invitation from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Thursday, February 6, 2025, to discuss the aftermath of the incident. The club called on all Ghanaian teams, including rivals Accra Hearts of Oak, to unite in the fight against football violence.

Suspension of Footballing Activities

Until justice is served and concrete measures are taken to prevent future violence, Kotoko has placed a hold on all senior team football activities. However, players recovering from injuries and the club’s juvenile team will be allowed to continue rehabilitation and training.
