Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for the immediate discontinuation of a criminal prosecution allegedly being pursued in his name, insisting he neither initiated nor endorsed any such legal action.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over the arrest and court appearance of an organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Agona West. The individual is reportedly being prosecuted for allegedly publishing false news and making offensive remarks about him.

Dr. Bawumia stated unequivocally that he has not filed any complaint against the individual and does not support the use of state institutions to punish citizens for speech, regardless of its nature.

“He does not desire, and will not endorse, the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian in his name for speech,” the statement emphasized.

Reflecting on his own political journey, Dr. Bawumia noted that he has long been subjected to criticism, insults, and falsehoods but has consistently refrained from resorting to legal action. Instead, he maintained that the appropriate response to misinformation and offensive speech lies in countering it with truth and constructive dialogue—not arrests or courtroom battles.

He further called on the Ghana Police Service and the Office of the Attorney-General of Ghana to immediately halt the prosecution and any similar cases allegedly linked to him.

Dr. Bawumia also appealed for the release of the accused, urging authorities to allow the young man to return to his family and livelihood.

According to him, Ghana’s democracy thrives when citizens—regardless of political affiliation—are able to express their views freely without fear of persecution.

In a conciliatory tone, Dr. Bawumia extended forgiveness to the accused and encouraged all political actors to focus on issues that directly impact the lives of Ghanaians.

The statement, signed by his Communications Directorate, reinforces his longstanding position on free speech and the responsible use of state power in democratic governance.
