Commonwealth will flourish under Ayorkor Botchwey – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is beaming with pride and joy over Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey’s historic election as the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. As the first Ghanaian to hold this esteemed position, Botchwey’s selection is a testament to her exceptional character, dedication to service, and the high regard in which Ghana is held among its peers.

Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, was announced as the new Secretary-General during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) in Apia, Samoa, on October 25. This milestone achievement marks a significant turning point for Ghana and the Commonwealth, as Botchwey brings her wealth of experience and expertise to the forefront of international diplomacy.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his heartfelt gratitude to fellow Heads of State for endorsing Botchwey’s candidature, describing her as a passionate advocate for their shared values. “Today, I feel a deep sense of pride and joy in congratulating Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway on her election as the next and 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth,” he stated. “As the first Ghanaian to hold this position, her selection speaks to the strength of her character and her dedication to service, as well as to the esteem in which our nation, Ghana, is held amongst her peers.”

With Botchwey at the helm, the President is confident that the Commonwealth will flourish, standing as a beacon of cooperation and strength for its people.

Her leadership will undoubtedly usher in a new era of progress and collaboration among member states.

Botchwey’s vision for the Commonwealth is built on several key pillars, including trade and investment, youth education and skills development, innovation and startups, and climate resilience.
She aims to reposition the organization to better serve its member countries, promoting economic transformation and leveraging technology to create opportunities for youth.

As a seasoned diplomat and politician, Botchwey brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She has served as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration since 2017 and has achieved numerous diplomatic successes, including establishing a Foreign Service Institute to improve training and service conditions for Ghanaian diplomats.

President Akufo-Addo also extended appreciation to outgoing Secretary-General Patricia Scotland for her outstanding service and wished her well in her future endeavors.
Additionally, he thanked Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afe and the people of Samoa for their warm hospitality during the CHOGM.
