The Electoral Commission of Ghana has provided clarity on the process of compiling the final voters’ register, emphasizing that it is a comprehensive and multi-step process that requires sufficient time to complete.
According to Chairperson Jean Mensa, this process is not a one-time event, but rather a series of intricate steps designed to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the register.
Mensa explained that the process begins with the establishment of District Registration Review Committees in all districts.
These committees, comprising representatives from political parties, traditional authorities, and security agencies, hear challenged cases presented by citizens.
This step allows for the resolution of disputes and ensures that only eligible voters are included in the register.
Following the district-level review, the process moves to adjudication, where political parties collaborate with the EC’s IT team to identify and address instances of multiple registrations. This critical step helps prevent duplicate entries and maintains the register’s integrity.
Next, the EC exhibits the provisional register, providing an opportunity for citizens to inspect and correct any discrepancies.
This transparency measure ensures that the register accurately reflects the eligible voter population.
Subsequently, District Registration Review Officers, appointed by the Chief Justice, review and rule on cases, including objections to individuals on the voters’ register.
These magistrates provide an impartial review, ensuring that the register is free from errors and inaccuracies.
After the magistrates’ rulings, the EC’s district officers implement the decisions, followed by verification and audit by regional and headquarters teams.
This thorough review process guarantees that all decisions and recommendations have been fully implemented.
Mensa stressed that, given the ongoing nature of these steps, calls for a forensic audit of the register are premature.
The EC is committed to completing the process in a transparent and efficient manner, and any audit would be unnecessary until all steps have been concluded.
The Electoral Commission’s website provides detailed information on the voter registration process, exhibition procedures, and other relevant information for stakeholders.
As Ghana prepares for upcoming elections, the EC’s commitment to a rigorous and transparent process aims to ensure the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.
