The Electoral Commission of Ghana has taken swift action following the passing of Madam Akua Donkor, the flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), by requesting that the party nominate a new presidential candidate within a 10-day timeframe.
This decision comes as a result of the Commission receiving official notification of Madam Akua Donkor’s demise.
In light of this development, the Electoral Commission has temporarily halted the printing of presidential ballot papers, which were nearing completion.
This move ensures that the electoral process remains fair and accurate, allowing the GFP to select a suitable replacement for their departed leader.
In a statement issued on October 29, the Electoral Commission clearly outlined the necessary steps for the GFP to take, saying, “The Commission has since informed the GFP to make arrangements to nominate a new Candidate and inform the Commission accordingly.
In the meantime, the Commission has suspended the printing of Presidential Ballot Papers which was near completion.”
The Electoral Commission also extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of Madam Akua Donkor, who passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra.
As the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor was a prominent voice in Ghanaian politics, recognized for her unwavering advocacy for farmers’ and women’s rights.
Her passing marks a significant loss for the party and her supporters, particularly as the nation approaches the general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.
The GFP now faces the daunting task of finding a suitable replacement to carry the party’s mantle forward.
In light of the upcoming elections, the GFP is expected to act swiftly in nominating a new presidential candidate.
This prompt action will ensure that the party’s electoral prospects remain intact and that the democratic process unfolds smoothly.
The Electoral Commission’s decision demonstrates its commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that all parties have a fair opportunity to participate.
As the GFP navigates this challenging period, the nation watches with interest, eager to see how the party will respond to this unexpected development.
With the election deadline drawing near, the GFP’s swift nomination of a new candidate will be crucial in maintaining the party’s visibility and momentum.
The coming days will be critical in shaping the party’s future and its prospects in the December polls.
