The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation proudly handed over the newly constructed and refurbished Tarkwa & Abosso (T&A) Stadium in Tarkwa to the National Sports Authority today.
This landmark event marks the completion of a significant investment that began in January 2020 and culminated in June this year, costing an impressive $16.2 million.
The extensive renovation has transformed the modest 400-seat football park into a 10,400 sitting capacity world-class stadium, equipped to host international matches. This development promises to invigorate the local sporting landscape and position Tarkwa as a key player in Ghanaian football.
Michael Akafia, Vice-President of External Affairs at Gold Fields Ghana and current President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, emphasized the broader impact of the stadium.
“The construction of the stadium will not only have a sporting impact,” Akafia stated. “Football has the potential to foster social cohesion between communities. Our decision to invest followed a comprehensive stakeholder consultation and engagement process with our host communities.”
The T&A Stadium will serve as the new home for Tarkwa’s Ghana Premier League team, Medeama SC, who were crowned champions for the 2022/2023 season.
The state-of-the-art facility is expected to boost local business activities, nurture young talent, and facilitate the development of football in Ghana, including women’s football.
In line with FIFA’s sustainable building guidelines, the stadium was constructed using materials from sustainable sources, ensuring it is energy and water-efficient. This aligns with Gold Fields’ mission to create enduring value beyond mining.
Akafia highlighted the long-term vision behind the project: “Our aim was to provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly stadium for the people of Tarkwa and surrounding communities. This stadium is more than just a sports venue; it is a catalyst for community development and social unity.”
The grand opening of the T&A Stadium promises to be a pivotal moment for Tarkwa, heralding a new era of sports and community engagement in the region.
