Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, has vowed to hold the Education Minister accountable for addressing the challenges facing the education sector.
The Akatsi North MP expressed frustration that the Minister has consistently failed to appear before Parliament to provide answers to their questions, leaving many concerns unaddressed.
The Minority has raised alarm bells, alleging that the government owes a staggering 6 billion Ghana Cedis to individuals and organizations involved in the Free Senior High School policy.
Nortsu-Kotoe is hopeful that the Minister will take the necessary steps to brief Parliament on the situation and provide a plan to address the issues.
The Education Committee plans to bring these pressing issues into the public domain, ensuring that the Minister is held accountable for finding solutions to the sector’s challenges.
By doing so, they aim to promote transparency and accountability in the education sector, ultimately benefiting the Ghanaian people.
According to Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, the government only takes action when issues are brought to the public’s attention.
He noted that whenever the committee invites the government to address concerns, they often respond with vague assurances that they are “working on it.”
Nortsu-Kotoe cited the example of the Basic Education Certificate Examination issue, where the committee had invited the Minister of Education and Finance to appear before them.
However, only the Deputy Minister of Education showed up, who was not equipped to address the issue at hand.
The Minority has therefore decided to take a different approach by bringing all the issues into the public domain.
This, Nortsu-Kotoe believes, will enable the public to understand the challenges people are facing and put pressure on the government to take necessary action.
“We will no longer accept vague assurances,” Nortsu-Kotoe said. “We need the Minister himself to appear before the committee and provide concrete solutions to the issues at hand.”
By bringing these issues to the public’s attention, the Minority hopes to hold the government accountable and ensure that they take the necessary action to address the challenges facing the education sector.
