Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has fired a shot across the bow of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), reminding them that parliamentary majority is not something that can be manufactured in Parliament, but rather earned through wins at the polling station level within constituencies.
His comments come on the heels of Thursday’s dramatic events in Parliament, where the Speaker declared four seats held by NPP MPs contesting the 2024 elections on different tickets as vacant.
This brief moment of triumph for the NDC was short-lived, as the Supreme Court granted a stay of execution just 24 hours later, nullifying the Speaker’s ruling until the substantive case is heard.
At a campaign rally in Nkawkaw on Saturday, Dr. Bawumia taunted the NDC, saying their “majority lasted just 24 hours… the shortest-living majority in history.” He emphasized that parliamentary majorities are won at the polling stations, and expressed confidence that the NPP will secure a decisive parliamentary majority in the December elections.
“We will meet them in the constituencies, we will meet them at the polling stations,” Dr. Bawumia declared. “What I can assure you is that from what I’ve seen – having been to over 200 constituencies, campaigned on the ground, and analyzed the data – if we held elections today, the NPP would have a decisive majority in Parliament.”
Dr. Bawumia also urged NPP members to remain united and focused on victory in December. “The election is not today. It’s on December 7.
But if we continue as we are, and we all come together, by midnight on December 7, you’ll hear that the NPP has won a decisive majority in Parliament. We will win at the polling stations.”
