President Mahama Appoints COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as New Inspector-General of Police

In a significant leadership change within the Ghana Police Service, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), replacing COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

This appointment, made in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, was announced in an official statement from the Presidency on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

COP Yohuno brings to the position a wealth of experience, having served in the Ghana Police Service for over four decades. Throughout his distinguished career, he has held various leadership roles, earning recognition for his commitment to law enforcement, crime prevention, and national security.

His extensive background in operations and administration is expected to be instrumental in driving the modernization and transformation of the police force to meet contemporary security challenges.

The swearing-in ceremony for COP Yohuno is scheduled for Friday, March 14, 2025. The government has expressed confidence in his ability to lead the service effectively, ensuring enhanced professionalism and security across the country.

The outgoing IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, was appointed in 2021 and is known for implementing key reforms, including community engagement initiatives and internal discipline measures within the service.

While no official reason has been provided for his removal, sources suggest that the decision is part of a broader restructuring effort within the Ghana Police Service.

This leadership change comes at a critical time as Ghana navigates security challenges, including electoral security, rising crime rates, and public confidence in law enforcement. Analysts and security experts will be closely monitoring how the new IGP addresses these issues in the coming months.
