The New Force political movement has issued a public apology after a disturbing video went viral showing one of its security team members physically assaulting a someone during a recent event.
The video, which sparked widespread condemnation online, captures a moment where a supporter—reportedly trying to approach the New Force presidential candidate—was violently kicked in the chest by a member of the party’s security detail. Eyewitnesses say the individual posed no threat and appeared to simply want to engage with the leader.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Charles Yomekpe, the movement described the incident as “deeply saddening and disturbing,” noting that the behavior of the security personnel involved was “unjustifiable and completely out of line with the values of the New Force.”
“We extend our sincerest apologies to the victim, their family, and to all Ghanaians,” the statement read. “The individual did not pose any security threat and deserved to be treated with dignity and respect.”
The New Force revealed that an internal investigation has already been launched to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. According to the statement, disciplinary action will be taken against the security officer responsible.
The movement also expressed appreciation to the public for calling out the misconduct and holding them to account.
“We are committed to transparency and accountability,” the statement added. “Steps are being taken to ensure that such a regrettable incident does not happen again.”
While the identity of the assaulted supporter has not been publicly disclosed, social media users and civil society groups have urged the New Force to follow through on their commitment to justice and to ensure the safety and rights of all citizens attending political events.
The New Force, known for its populist messaging and emphasis on political reform, has been gaining traction ahead of the 2024 general elections. However, the latest controversy may test the movement’s ability to maintain public trust in the run-up to the polls.
