Wontumi Jailed 20 Years Over Illegal Mining on Samreboi Concession

The Accra High Court has sentenced the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, to 20 years’ imprisonment for his involvement in illegal mining activities on the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.

The ruling, delivered on Monday, marks one of the most high-profile convictions in Ghana’s ongoing fight against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey. The court found Chairman Wontumi guilty of orchestrating and supervising unlawful mining operations that caused significant environmental destruction within the Samreboi forest enclave.

According to court documents, the illegal activities led to the degradation of vast portions of forest land, pollution of water bodies, and the destruction of farmlands, severely affecting livelihoods in surrounding communities. Prosecutors argued that the convict used his influence and resources to bypass regulatory requirements and continue operations despite multiple warnings from authorities.

In handing down the sentence, the presiding judge emphasized the need for deterrence, stating that the environmental damage caused by illegal mining poses a grave threat to Ghana’s natural resources and future generations. The judge noted that individuals in positions of influence must be held to a higher standard of accountability.

“The court cannot overlook the scale of destruction and the blatant disregard for the laws of this country,” the judge said. “This sentence is intended to serve as a strong warning to all those engaged in illegal mining.”

The prosecution presented evidence including satellite imagery, witness testimonies, and reports from environmental agencies, all pointing to sustained illegal operations on the concession. The court also heard that attempts by regulatory bodies to halt the activities were repeatedly ignored.

Chairman Wontumi’s legal team had pleaded for leniency, citing his contributions to political development and business investments in the country. However, the court dismissed these arguments, stressing that no individual is above the law.

The conviction has sparked widespread reactions across the country, with environmental advocacy groups welcoming the decision as a significant step in combating illegal mining. Many have called for further investigations into other influential figures suspected of engaging in similar activities.

Illegal mining remains a critical issue in Ghana, with devastating impacts on forests, water bodies, and local economies. Successive governments have pledged to clamp down on the practice, though enforcement has often been challenged by political and economic interests.

The 20-year sentence handed to Chairman Wontumi is expected to send a strong signal about the state’s renewed commitment to tackling the menace and protecting the country’s natural resources.

Meanwhile, legal experts suggest that the case could set a precedent for future prosecutions involving high-profile individuals implicated in environmental crimes.

Chairman Wontumi is expected to begin serving his sentence immediately, though his lawyers have indicated plans to appeal the ruling.
