AFCON 2023 PREVIEW: Mozambique Battles Ghana in AFCON Showdown

In a clash of contrasting fortunes, Mozambique and Ghana find themselves at a pivotal juncture in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), each with their fate hanging in the balance.

Both teams, with just one point from the group stage, are on a quest for victory to secure a coveted spot in the knockout rounds.

Mozambique, ranked 113th by FIFA, faces an uphill battle, currently at the bottom of Group B with an inferior goal difference to Ghana. The Mambas must secure a win against their formidable opponents to maximize their chances of progressing.

However, even a victory might not be enough if Egypt triumphs over Cape Verde, leaving Mozambique anxiously vying for one of the four best third-placed positions.

Adding to Mozambique’s challenges is their historical struggle against Ghana, having never secured a victory in their encounters (D2, L4).

The weight of this record looms large as Conde Chiquinho’s men aim to defy the odds and make history on the AFCON stage.

On the other side, four-time AFCON winners Ghana face defensive concerns, having conceded twice in each of their group games.

With just one win in their last seven internationals, the Black Stars must address their defensive vulnerabilities to keep their dreams alive and secure their first knockout stage appearance since 2019.

The clash also showcases intriguing players to watch. Clésio, who found the net against Egypt, carries a unique omen, having never lost an international when he scores. Meanwhile, Ghana places hope in the prolific Mohammed Kudus, who has notched six goals in as many appearances for club and country.

As the teams prepare to square off, the significance of maintaining an unbeaten head-to-head record for Ghana cannot be overstated. History favors the Black Stars, with their only recent AFCON win coming against a team outside FIFA’s top-100.

In a tournament where no team advanced to the knockouts with fewer than three points in 2022, the stakes are undeniably high.

The AFCON showdown between Mozambique and Ghana promises an enthralling spectacle, where the outcome not only shapes their destiny in the tournament but adds another chapter to the rich history of African football.
