In a setback for Ghanaian football, the Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has levied a fine of Fifteen Thousand Dollars ($15,000) on the Ghana Football Association.
The penalty stems from fan troubles during the Africa Cup of Nations Match 4 game between Ghana and Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
The incident, which occurred at half-time in stand N°18, involved two groups of Ghanaian supporters engaged in a scuffle. The situation escalated to the use of tear gas, prompting intervention from safety and security officials.
The Disciplinary Board’s decision to impose the fine followed a thorough examination of facts, allegations, legal arguments, and evidence related to the proceedings.
The Ghana Football Association is now obligated to settle the fine within 60 days of the decision. In response to the disciplinary action, the association issued a statement urging supporters and all Ghanaians present in Cote D’Ivoire to maintain the highest standards of behavior within the laws of the game.
Expressing their commitment to ensuring the incident remains an isolated one, the Ghana Football Association announced plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the leadership of supporter groups.
The aim is to prevent any future occurrences and promote a positive environment for fans to cheer on the Black Stars in a manner that upholds the spirit of fair play.
