Premier League clubs have unanimously agreed to introduce semi-automated offside technology starting next season, a move aimed at enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of decision-making in football matches.

The decision to adopt this cutting-edge technology comes after extensive monitoring and evaluation of its effectiveness, following its successful implementation in prestigious tournaments such as the World Cup and Women’s World Cup, as well as its usage in the Champions League.

The semi-automated offside technology utilizes artificial intelligence to track offsides, providing quicker and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line based on optical player tracking. This advancement is expected to streamline the decision-making process and reduce the reliance on manually drawn offside lines by VAR officials.

The system works by identifying key skeleton points on multiple players simultaneously, including the head, toes, upper arm, and knees. By utilizing ball-tracking tools to pinpoint the point of contact, the technology generates an automatic suggestion for an offside decision to the VAR official.

“We expect that semi-automated offside technology can take us a step further,” remarked Pierluigi Collina, chairman of FIFA’s referee committee. “Sometimes, the process to check a possible offside takes too long, especially when the offside incident is very tight. This is where semi-automated offside technology comes in – to offer faster and more accurate decisions.”
