Former Auditor General Daniel Yao Domelevo has urged government officials to respect the independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and avoid interfering with its work.

He emphasized the importance of President Akufo-Addo providing full support to the OSP, enabling it to fulfill its mandate effectively.

Domelevo made these remarks during the 2024 edition of the Domelevo Accountability Lectures, where he acknowledged his initial skepticism about the OSP. However, he highlighted his subsequent collaboration with the first Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, to ensure the success of the office.

Domelevo’s comments come at a time when the Special Prosecutor has just overcome a petition seeking their removal from office.

He emphasized the need for the OSP to be allowed to operate independently, without government interference, to effectively combat corruption.

By refraining from interference and providing full support, the government can demonstrate its commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring accountability.

Domelevo’s lecture highlighted the importance of safeguarding the independence of institutions like the OSP, which are crucial in promoting transparency and good governance.

Domelevo expressed concern that the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, is facing challenges and troubles that are hindering his work.

He called on government officials to protect Agyebeng and allow him to do his job, stating that he appears to be the only person serious about fighting corruption.

Domelevo shared his personal experience, revealing that he was initially skeptical about the OSP bill but eventually supported it as a means to combat corruption.

He worked closely with the first Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, but noted that Amidu was forced out of office due to pressure.
