Athletic Bilbao forward Iñaki Williams has announced his decision to bring his journey with the Ghana national team to an end, bringing the curtain down on a chapter that saw him represent the Black Stars with pride and commitment.
Williams made the announcement in a heartfelt message on his X account, expressing gratitude to Ghana and everyone who supported him throughout his time with the national team.
“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end,” Williams wrote.
The 32-year-old forward said he leaves the Black Stars with happiness, pride and the peace of mind that he gave his all whenever he wore the national team shirt.
“I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt,” he stated.
Williams, who was born in Bilbao, Spain, to Ghanaian parents, chose to represent Ghana internationally in 2022 after previously featuring for Spain at senior level. His decision to switch allegiance generated significant excitement among Ghanaian football fans.
He subsequently became part of the Black Stars squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, as well as other major international assignments.
Reflecting on his Ghana experience, Williams said representing the country gave him much more than football, particularly by reconnecting him with his roots.
“Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest,” he said.
The forward also expressed appreciation to teammates, coaches, officials, supporters and everyone who played a role in his international career.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been part of this journey and for all the love you have always shown me,” he added.
Despite ending his playing career with the Black Stars, Williams made it clear that his connection with Ghana will remain strong, promising to continue supporting the national team from afar.
“Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am,” he wrote.
He concluded his emotional message with the words: “Medaase. Always Ghana.” 🇬🇭❤️
Williams’ decision marks the end of his international career with Ghana and leaves the Black Stars with one fewer option in attack as the national team continues preparations for its upcoming assignments.
