Nsoatreman FC has officially announced its decision to withdraw from the 2024/2025 Ghana Premier League following the tragic events that occurred during their Matchday 19 fixture against Asante Kotoko at the Professor Koromansah II Stadium.
In an emergency meeting held on February 3, 2025, the club’s President and Board of Directors unanimously agreed to step away from the league, citing the unfortunate loss of life and the need to take a firm stand against football-related violence.
In a statement, Nsoatreman FC expressed deep sorrow over the incident, condemning the acts of hooliganism that marred the game and ultimately led to the fatal stabbing of a Kotoko supporter.
“This decision has not been arrived at lightly, considering the possible consequential effects it is likely to have on the league and other clubs,” the statement read. “However, we believe that yesterday’s regrettable incident cannot be counterbalanced with any other remedial measure.”
The club emphasized that their withdrawal is a demonstration of their strong disapproval of the violence that occurred, stressing that football should be played in an atmosphere of tolerance, love, and sportsmanship.
Nsoatreman FC also noted that continuing in the league could inadvertently deepen the pain of the bereaved family and the entire football fraternity.
The club extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and all stakeholders affected by the tragic event.
The withdrawal of Nsoatreman FC adds another layer of uncertainty to an already tense situation, as the GFA had earlier suspended Matchday 20 fixtures to assess the impact of the violence and implement necessary security measures.
It remains to be seen how the football authorities will respond to this latest development.
