Bishop Salifu Amoako arrested over fatal East Legon accident

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako and his wife, Mouha Amoako, in connection with the fatal accident that occurred at East Legon on October 12, 2024.
The accident, which involved their 16-year-old son, Elrad Salifu Amoako, resulted in the tragic loss of two lives and left several others injured.

According to the police statement, Elrad was driving a Jaguar SUV with registration number GN 7801-20 when he crashed into a 4×4 Acura vehicle with registration number GR 2542-23, driven by Joseph Ackah with four occupants.
The impact of the collision was severe, causing both vehicles to catch fire and burn beyond recognition.

The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, with a focus on Elrad’s young age and the severity of the incident. Bishop Elisha and his wife are currently in custody, assisting authorities with further inquiries.

The police investigation aims to determine how a 16-year-old was driving a vehicle and the events leading to the fatal crash. The authorities are also working to establish whether any laws or regulations were breached, allowing a minor to operate a vehicle.

In a show of solidarity and support, a team from the Police Management Board, led by the Inspector-General of Police,

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, visited the bereaved family to offer condolences and comfort. The team also visited the injured at the hospital, wishing them a speedy recovery.

The police have assured the public of a thorough and impartial investigation into the accident, with the goal of bringing closure to the affected families.
The statement from the police emphasized their commitment to remembering the affected families in their prayers during this difficult time.

The incident has sparked concerns about road safety and the enforcement of traffic laws in Ghana. Many have called for stricter regulations and penalties to prevent such tragic accidents from occurring in the future.

As the investigation continues, the police urge anyone with information about the accident to come forward and assist in the inquiry.
