Election 2024: Court blocks Cynthia Morrison’s Independent bid for Agona West

Cynthia Mamle Morrison’s bid to contest the Agona West parliamentary seat as an independent candidate has encountered a significant obstacle.

A District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru has issued an injunction against her candidacy, effectively ordering her to refrain from any activities related to the nomination process for the position of Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency.

This development comes at a critical juncture, with the 2024 general elections fast approaching, and has cast uncertainty over Morrison’s political future in the constituency.
Having successfully contested and won the seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in both 2016 and 2020, Morrison’s decision to run independently was triggered by her loss in the party’s primary in 2024.

Morrison has been vocal in her criticisms of the party leadership, accusing them of marginalizing her despite her track record and contributions to both the constituency and the party’s success in previous elections.
She has expressed her disappointment with the internal processes leading to the selection of a parliamentary candidate for the NPP, citing favouritism and a lack of transparency.

The former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection secured 152 votes in the NPP’s April 13 primary, losing to Christopher Arthur, who received 240 votes.
This outcome led Morrison to take matters into her own hands and seek re-election as an independent candidate.

However, the court’s injunction has thrown her plans into disarray, raising questions about her eligibility to contest the seat. The ruling has sparked concerns among Morrison’s supporters, who fear that her chances of re-election may be compromised.

Morrison’s decision to run independently was seen as a bold move, driven by her desire to serve the people of Agona West despite the party’s internal politics.
Her campaign had gained momentum, with many constituents expressing support for her independent bid.

The court’s decision has now created uncertainty, not only for Morrison but also for the constituents of Agona West. As the electoral process unfolds, the people of Agona West will be watching closely to see how this development affects the outcome of the elections.

In the meantime, Morrison’s team is likely to explore all available options to challenge the injunction and clear the way for her candidacy. The coming days will be crucial in determining the fate of Morrison’s political career and the future representation of Agona West in Parliament.

As the 2024 general elections draw near, the Agona West constituency is poised to witness a intense electoral battle.
The court’s injunction against Morrison’s candidacy has added a new layer of complexity to the contest, leaving many to wonder what the outcome will be. One thing is certain, however: the people of Agona West will be eagerly awaiting the resolution of this issue.
