A man posing as a medical doctor has been arrested at the United Brain Hospital in Mallam, Accra, after authorities uncovered a complex scam involving impersonation, online romance, and fraudulent travel deals.
The suspect, identified as Federick Papa Kow-Assifuah, was apprehended by police while dressed in a white lab coat, complete with a stethoscope around his neck, as he waited to meet another unsuspecting victim he had lured online.
Investigations revealed that Kow-Assifuah had no medical training or credentials but had been masquerading as a doctor to gain the trust of women on social media platforms. He initiated romantic relationships with his victims and convinced them to part with large sums of money under the pretense of securing travel opportunities abroad — all part of a carefully orchestrated scam.
When arrested, Kow-Assifuah was found in possession of disturbing paraphernalia intended to enhance his false image:
- Two stethoscopes
- Three intravenous (IV) drips
- Five syringes
- Two sample bottles
- One roll of plaster
- Six bottles of vaccines
- One Ghanaian passport
- Cash amounting to GH¢8,500
Authorities believe that the suspect had used these items to create the illusion of being a practicing medical professional. Police are working to trace the full extent of his activities, including the number of women defrauded and whether he posed any public health risks through unauthorized medical procedures.
“This arrest should serve as a strong warning to the public,” said a police spokesperson. “Always verify the credentials of individuals claiming to be professionals, especially when it involves your health or financial decisions.”
The suspect is currently in custody and assisting with further investigations. He is expected to face multiple charges, including impersonation, fraud, and obtaining money under false pretenses.
Members of the public who may have fallen victim to similar scams are urged to report to the nearest police station.
