Parliament has taken a significant step towards promoting fairness and transparency in the shipping industry by passing the Ghana Shippers Authority Bill 2024.

This landmark legislation empowers the Ghana Shippers Authority to regulate and standardize shipping charges, fees, and requirements imposed by service providers, creating a more equitable environment for local businesses involved in shipping and trade.

The move aims to address the long-standing challenges faced by local shippers, who have been vulnerable to unfair treatment and exploitative practices due to their weak bargaining power against multinational shipping service providers.

The fragmentation of shippers within the country has led to a lack of cohesion, making it difficult for them to negotiate fair prices and terms.

The Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament highlighted the need for regulation, citing the control of ports by multinational companies, which has resulted in exorbitant fees being imposed on port users.

These excessive charges have increased the cost of shipping and trade for local businesses, straining their operations and profitability.
