Chaos erupted in Ghana’s Parliament today as the Leader of the House, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, made controversial comments about the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
The derogatory remarks sparked outrage from the Minority side, leading to a suspension of the sitting by the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako.
Afenyo-Markin, who represents the Effutu constituency and serves as the Majority leader, faced intense heckling and demands for an apology from the Minority after he questioned Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s suitability for the presidency based on her age.
The comments were made during the final debates on the State of the Nation address presented by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Efforts by the Minority to get Afenyo-Markin to withdraw and apologize proved unsuccessful, prompting the interruption of the proceedings to prevent further escalation. The suspension underscores the tense atmosphere and deep divisions within the Ghanaian Parliament.
The Minority, led by the Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, cited parliamentary rules to justify their demand for an apology.
Gomashie argued that Afenyo-Markin’s comments violated Order 123 (2) and (6) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, which prohibit offensive and irrelevant remarks during debates.
In response, the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh Dompreh, called for tolerance in parliamentary debates, noting that attacks on political figures have been common throughout the discussions.
He defended Afenyo-Markin’s statements, stating that they were part of a comparison of records of former state personalities seeking to lead the country.
As the fallout from this parliamentary clash reverberates, the incident raises questions about the need for decorum and respect in political discourse.
The suspension serves as a reminder of the challenges Ghana faces in fostering a constructive and respectful environment within its legislative body.
