It’s time to reform UN’s ‘unjust’ Security Council – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana is advocating for major reforms within the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the need for a fairer global governance system.
He made this appeal at the UN Summit on the Future of the World, pointing out that the current Security Council is outdated and doesn’t reflect today’s reality, particularly with Africa’s 1.4 billion people being grossly underrepresented ¹.

Akufo-Addo stressed that true multilateralism can’t exist when global governance structures are rooted in inequality and injustice.

He’s calling for bold reforms to ensure every nation, regardless of size or wealth, has an equal voice. This isn’t the first time he’s pushed for UN reform; in his 2023 address to the UN General Assembly, he highlighted the need for change, citing the organization’s failure to address global challenges like the war in Ukraine and instability in the Sahel region ¹.

Today, September 25, Akufo-Addo is expected to deliver his final address to the UN General Assembly, where he’ll likely discuss pressing issues like climate change and other recent global developments.

His message of reform and equality is timely, as the world faces numerous challenges that require collective action and cooperation ².
