Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has undergone a successful prostate cancer surgery in the United States, his family has confirmed.
In a press release issued on Monday, June 16, Prof. Mrs. Angela Ofori-Atta, wife of the former minister, announced that Mr. Ofori-Atta underwent a scheduled robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The procedure took place on Friday, June 13.
According to Mrs. Ofori-Atta, the surgery was part of efforts to address prostate cancer that the former Finance Minister had been battling. She disclosed that the medical team was pleased with the outcome of the procedure and that Mr. Ofori-Atta has now begun a postoperative care regimen.
“This has been very difficult; with the OSP choosing the period just before his surgery to declare a red alert on him,” she stated, referring to the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s recent decision to place Mr. Ofori-Atta on a wanted list.
Despite the legal and health challenges, Mrs. Ofori-Atta described her husband as resilient and said he remains focused on regaining full health.
“Kenneth is bearing up well and focused on doing whatever he can to be restored to good health. Our family is truly grateful for the support and prayers of many people and pastors,” she added.
Ken Ofori-Atta served as Ghana’s Finance Minister from 2017 until 2023, during which he oversaw several key economic reforms, including Ghana’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The family has not yet disclosed when he is expected to return to Ghana.
