Ghana Police Service have confirmed the arrest of six persons for their suspected involvement in the murder of Imoro Sherrif, a soldier.
On Tuesday, March 7, videos of soldiers invasion in Ashaiman in what looks like a man-hunt surfaced online.
Many citizens, especially those outside the Greater Accra Region were dumfounded. It later appeared a soldier called Imoro Sherrif had been murdered. The videos circulating were being understood then.
Mixed reactions and opinions flooded the internet, some said the military wanted to avenge the death of their colleague, others deemed it fit with the notion of Ashaiman being known for violence.
Meanings were read into the matter by the populace, with some saying he(Imoro Sherrif) visited his girlfriend who was double dating, and the other guy ambushed him in the middle of the night and murdered him.
Others claimed it was mob attack. Then, one influential figure from Ashaiman, reggae/dancehall act, Stonebwoy, who was out of the country condemned both the killing of the young soldier and the “brutalization” from the soldiers to the residents of Ashaiman in a tweet.
He later made a video asking why one should kill another just because of a woman. He continued by asking why should a soldier after someone’s girlfriend. Stonebwoy was insinuating the soldier got killed after going after another guy’s girlfriend, it appears.
The Ghana Armed Forces released a statement on March 7 to deny speculations of any vengeance but rather, to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous crime.
They noted the swoop was carried under the instructions of the Military High Command. They also noted they picked up about 184 suspects aged between 21 and 47 years old and handed them to the Military Police who will subsequently hand them over to the Ghana Police Service for screening and further actions. The Ghana Armed Forces acknowledged that regrettably some innocent persons might have been caught up in the operation and subsequently suffered some distress due to the areas they found themselves at the time.
