Lamine Yamal has spoken out against discriminatory behavior in football after an offensive chant targeting Muslims was heard during a recent match.
Taking to Instagram, the young star reaffirmed his faith, stating, “I am Muslim, alhamdulillah,” before addressing the incident that unfolded in the stadium. According to Yamal, sections of the crowd were heard chanting, “Whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim,” a phrase he described as disrespectful and unacceptable.
While acknowledging that the chant was not personally directed at him, the Barcelona forward emphasized that such language remains harmful. “I know it was directed at the opposing team and wasn’t something personal against me, but as a Muslim, it is still disrespectful and unacceptable,” he wrote.
Yamal was careful to point out that the behavior of a few should not define the wider fanbase, but he did not shy away from criticizing those responsible. He labeled the use of religion as a tool for mockery in football as both ignorant and racist.
The 17-year-old also used the moment to highlight the true spirit of the game. “Football exists to be enjoyed and to support, not to insult people for who they are or what they believe in,” he added, calling for greater respect and inclusivity within stadiums.
Despite the incident, Yamal expressed gratitude to supporters who continue to back the team positively, ending his message with appreciation and optimism ahead of upcoming competitions, including the World Cup.
His statement adds to the growing conversation around discrimination in football, with players increasingly using their platforms to demand accountability and promote unity both on and off the pitch.
