Residents of Kojokrom in Ghana’s Western Region are fed up with the lack of progress and development in their community, despite repeatedly voicing their concerns to authorities.
The community’s frustration was evident during an appearance on Channel One TV’s Community Forum in the Essikado-Ketan constituency, where concerned residents highlighted the dire need for improvement in various sectors.
A frustrated driver, Mr. Yale, was among those who expressed his disappointment, specifically calling out Member of Parliament Joe Ghartey and President Akufo-Addo for failing to address the community’s needs.
He shared his personal struggle with the poor road network, which forced him to sell his car due to maintenance costs.
“The road is very bad here,” Mr. Yale lamented. “Because of the road, I had to sell my car because I could not afford vehicle maintenance. Now, I’m using someone’s car to work because I cannot afford daily repairs.” His frustration was palpable as he questioned the government’s commitment to improving the lives of drivers in the community.
“Akufo-Addo, is it our fault we voted for you?” Mr. Yale asked rhetorically. “You don’t care about the drivers here. Joe Ghartey has been in power for almost 20 years, yet our roads are very bad.
Now, you want your votes so you’ll come with T-shirts and other things to convince us.” His words echoed the sentiments of many in the community.
Another resident, Naomi, also expressed her concerns about the community’s dwindling trade and commerce, inadequate healthcare services, and subpar education system.
She criticized both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for failing to address these pressing issues.
Naomi highlighted the community’s healthcare struggles, where patients often have to purchase medications despite having National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) coverage.
This is a clear indication that the community’s needs are not being met, and the healthcare system is failing to provide adequate support.
The lack of development in Kojokrom is a stark contrast to the community’s potential for growth. Located close to the regional capital and with a railway line passing through it, Kojokrom should be thriving. However, the absence of government support and investment has hindered its progress.
Community development is crucial for empowering residents and improving their lives. It emphasizes participation, social justice, and equality.
Unfortunately, Kojokrom’s residents are not experiencing this. Their voices need to be heard, and their concerns addressed to bring about positive change.
The community’s frustration is a reflection of the broader challenges facing Ghana’s development. The country’s growth and progress are often hindered by inadequate infrastructure, poor healthcare services, and a struggling education system. Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from policymakers, community leaders, and residents.
As Ghana continues on its development trajectory, it is essential to prioritize community development and address the concerns of residents like those in Kojokrom.
By doing so, the country can unlock its full potential and ensure that all citizens have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
In conclusion, the residents of Kojokrom have made their voices heard, and it is now up to the authorities to respond.
The community’s demands for better infrastructure, healthcare, and education are not unreasonable, and it is time for policymakers to take action and address these pressing concerns.
