Akufo-Addo pleads with Organised Labour to postpone planned nationwide strike

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed strong reservations about John Dramani Mahama’s ability to lead Ghana, citing concerns that his return to power would put key policies, such as the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, in jeopardy. Speaking to the chiefs and people of the North-East Region, Akufo-Addo warned that voting for Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming December 7 elections could lead to the cancellation of major initiatives ¹.

Akufo-Addo’s concerns stem from Mahama’s recent remarks, which suggest that the NDC leader might scrap the Free SHS program if elected.
The president urged Mahama to clarify his stance on the policy, emphasizing that Ghanaians deserve to know his true position. “What should we believe? Are you going to change it? Are you going to cancel it? Are you going to improve it?” Akufo-Addo asked, highlighting Mahama’s inconsistent statements on the issue.

Akufo-Addo’s skepticism about Mahama’s leadership is not new. Previously, Mahama had stated that Akufo-Addo would “painfully hand over” power to him, implying that the current president is trying to avoid accountability for alleged corruption .
However, Akufo-Addo’s recent comments suggest that he is questioning Mahama’s trustworthiness and ability to maintain critical policies.

The Free SHS program has been a significant initiative under Akufo-Addo’s administration, benefiting countless students across Ghana. Akufo-Addo’s warning highlights the stakes in the upcoming election and the potential impact on the country’s education system.
