Asante Kotoko SC has issued a strong condemnation of the violent incidents that occurred during their Ghana Premier League Matchweek 19 fixture against Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Koramansah Park.
The club described the events as unacceptable and tragic, following the loss of a supporter and injuries sustained by players, officials, and media personnel.
In an official statement, Kotoko detailed how their team faced open hostility from sections of the home crowd from the moment they arrived at the stadium.
The hostility escalated during the match, with missiles being thrown at the Kotoko bench multiple times. Their Head of Media suffered a serious ear injury after being struck by an object, while goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was physically attacked by pitch invaders.
Reports also indicate that media personnel and traveling supporters from Kumasi were targeted in violent attacks. The most heartbreaking incident, according to the club, was the stabbing of a Kotoko supporter, who later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The club extended its condolences to the bereaved family and the entire Kotoko fraternity.
Additionally, several pieces of valuable equipment belonging to the club—including laptops, communication devices, and other essential gadgets—were destroyed in the chaos.
Despite the security breaches, Asante Kotoko chose to complete the game, demonstrating their commitment to fairness and the integrity of the competition.
However, the club has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to take swift and decisive action against those responsible to prevent such incidents from recurring.
“Asante Kotoko will fully cooperate with the Ghana Football Association in any investigations and expects swift and firm action to be taken against those responsible.
Football must be played in a secure and fair environment, and these acts of violence must not be tolerated,” the statement read.
The club urged all stakeholders to prioritize security at league venues, emphasizing that the safety of players, officials, and supporters must be guaranteed at all times.
