Bayer Leverkusen have concluded the 2023/24 Bundesliga season in historic fashion, finishing unbeaten after a 2-1 victory over Augsburg on the final day.
Under the leadership of Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen clinched the league title with 28 wins and six draws, scoring 89 goals and conceding just 24. They ended the campaign 17 points clear of second-placed Stuttgart, who leapfrogged Bayern Munich on a dramatic final day.
Leverkusen’s triumph marks a significant turnaround for a club often ridiculed for their near misses in the past. This season, however, they dominated the league and are now eyeing an unprecedented treble, with upcoming finals in the DFB Pokal and Europa League.
On May 22, Alonso’s squad will face Atalanta in the Europa League final, followed by a DFB Pokal showdown against Kaiserslautern. Leverkusen enter both fixtures as favorites, hoping to cap their remarkable season with more silverware.
The club’s success has also seen Xabi Alonso commit to staying beyond the summer, ensuring stability as they aim to retain their top talents. Attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, a target for Manchester City and Real Madrid, and right-back Jeremie Frimpong, linked with Manchester United, are among those attracting significant interest. Frimpong’s €40 million release clause is only active this summer, adding urgency to his suitors’ pursuit.
Defensively, Jonathan Tah, entering the final year of his contract, may be sold if no extension is agreed, while a decision looms on Bayern Munich loanee Josip Stanisic.
With an unbeaten league campaign in the books and more potential trophies on the horizon, Bayer Leverkusen’s 2023/24 season is set to be remembered as one of the most successful in the club’s history.
