In a Saturday night international friendly match against American powerhouse DC United, the champions of the Ghana Premier League Medeama SC were defeated 2-1.
The game, which took place at Audi Field, was marked by a spirit of competition as both teams gave it their all.
The Ghanaian national anthem was sung at the stadium prior to kickoff, making the event more than just a football game but a part of Washington, D.C.’s celebration of African culture.
After D.C. United parted ways with head coach Wayne Rooney, assistant coach Frédéric Brillant took over the game.
Under Brillant’s leadership, D.C. United got out to a solid start, earning an early lead that they clung onto, going into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
After the interval, Medeama refocused and, with the help of Nurudeen Abdulai, managed to equalize the game.
To win the game, D.C. United scored once more despite Medeama’s sadness in having a goal disallowed. The Ghanaian champions’ efforts were praised by the audience.
Given the challenges they faced, such as the inability to field more than four substitutes due to visa issues, Medeama may be pleased with their performance in this friendly, which was their first game played outside of Africa.
Medeama will return home to defend their league crown and participate in the CAF Champions League.
