Prosper Harrison Addo, General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has defended the selection of Otto Addo as coach of the Black Stars for the 2022 World Cup.

The former Ghanaian international, who had previously worked as Milovan Rajevac’s assistant coach, was selected to head a four-person technical team tasked with getting Ghana into the World Cup by defeating Nigeria in the playoff of the qualifiers.
After qualifying, Otto Addo was selected to continue with the squad that was competing for the fourth time on the international stage. In contrast, Ghana did not proceed past the group stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), losing to longtime rivals Uruguay in their third game, which forced the Borussia Dortmund coach to resign from his position.

Harrison Addo, though, defended the choice, saying that it was Otto Addo’s genius that ultimately helped Ghana defeat Nigeria and advance to Qatar for the World Cup.
He was our team’s World Cup qualifying coach. The differences between coaching a national team and a club team have even been discussed by Mourinho in an interview. As the coach of a club team, you always have your players with you; however, this is not the case for the national team.
No one can persuade me that Otto Addo didn’t do his duty as national team coach in-between the international periods.
On a morning show at Asempa FM, Prosper Harrison said to Maestro the host that, “I don’t get the term that Otto Addo was a part-time coach,”

Chris Hughton was chosen to succeed Otto Addo in March and has already presided over two games in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers. Hughton previously worked as the team’s technical advisor during Addo’s rule.
