Kurt Okraku, the president of the Ghana Football Association (FA), is optimistic he will be re-elected as the FA gets ready for elections in October.
Okraku, who won an intensely contested election in October 2019 and feels he has done the greatest job possible representing football during his current term.
Former FA Vice President George Afriyie received 40 votes, Kotoko CEO Nana Yaw Amponsah received 27, and Okraku received 44 votes in the first round of the previous elections.
In the second round of voting, Okraku received just two votes more than the necessary 50% plus one. Afriyie withdrew from the third round that was required, leaving Okraku as the only contender. In the end, he won 93 votes in favor, which was more than the necessary 50% plus one threshold.
While there have been some major disappointments, such the Black Maidens’ suspension for age cheating and the Black Stars’ dismal performance at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon last year, where they were eliminated without a single victory.
Okraku’s administration can also point to some accomplishments. These include the Black Satellites’ triumph at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and Ghana’s return to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He stated again the revenue into the football association has increased since he came to office.
They have gone through three times FIFA auditing and domestic auditing which is a plus for the association and the football electorate will appreciate him during election.
In a SuperSport interview with Juliet Bawuah, Okraku stated, “Football will speak just like it did in 2019.” He believes the football electorate will vote massively for him once again in October.
What I know for sure is that we have done our utmost to serve football, he continued. Football has shown us that there are more hours in a day than the 24 that we were taught about at school. Additionally, we spent more than 24 hours working one day.
The question is that will Kurt still remain as the GFA President??
