Kwabena Agyepong: Bawumia’s selection as NPP flagbearer has disarmed NDC

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Senior Campaign Adviser to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has made a compelling assertion regarding the impact of Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle, Mr. Agyepong explained that Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy has effectively neutralized the NDC’s long-standing ethnocentric tactics.

Historically, the NDC has relied on portraying the NPP as an “Akan party” to sway voters, fueling anti-NPP sentiments.
However, with Dr. Bawumia, a Northerner and a Muslim, at the helm of the NPP, this narrative has been disrupted. Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy demonstrates the NPP’s inclusivity and broad voter appeal, transcending ethnic lines.

Agyepong argued that this shift has complicated the NDC’s ability to effectively push their traditional campaign message.
The NDC’s long-standing propaganda has been rendered ineffective, as Dr. Bawumia’s leadership showcases the NPP’s commitment to national unity. Despite internal conflicts and challenges, Dr. Bawumia’s leadership strengthens the party’s position, particularly in regions like Greater Accra.

The Senior Campaign Adviser emphasized that the NPP’s choice of Dr. Bawumia has silenced critics and demonstrated the party’s commitment to inclusivity.

He cited the party’s significant support across the country, especially in key areas, and expressed confidence in the NPP’s chances in the upcoming 2024 general election.

Agyepong highlighted the party’s formidable grassroots support, characterizing its base as “very strong.” This grassroots support has been a crucial factor in the NPP’s past successes, and the party has recognized the importance of intensifying campaign activities at the local level.

The NPP’s focus on grassroots support and Dr. Bawumia’s inclusive candidacy may challenge the NDC’s traditional campaign tactics and boost the NPP’s chances in the upcoming election.
As the campaign season unfolds, it remains to be seen how the NDC will adapt its strategy to counter the NPP’s newfound advantage.

Agyepong’s assertion underscores the significance of Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy in reshaping the political landscape.
By selecting a flagbearer from the North, the NPP has sent a powerful message about its commitment to national unity and inclusivity.

The opposition NDC, meanwhile, is grappling with the implications of Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy. The party’s traditional ethnocentric tactics, which have been employed since 1982, are no longer effective.
The NDC’s leadership, including former President John Mahama, had previously expressed skepticism about the NPP’s willingness to elect a Northerner as flagbearer.

However, the NPP’s decision to elect Dr. Bawumia has proven them wrong. As Agyepong noted, the NDC is now struggling to find a new narrative, having lost its most potent propaganda weapon. The party’s inability to adapt to this new reality may ultimately prove costly in the 2024 general election.
