Real Madrid have officially confirmed the signing of French superstar Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer, concluding a lengthy and much-publicized transfer saga. The Champions League winners secured the services of the 25-year-old forward following the expiration of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Mbappe, who announced his intention to leave PSG in May after seven successful seasons, has signed a five-year contract with Real Madrid. During his time in Paris, Mbappe became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, netting an impressive 256 goals.
The move to Real Madrid fulfills a long-held ambition for both Mbappe and the Spanish giants, who have been pursuing the prolific forward for several years. Real Madrid’s 15th Champions League title win on Saturday against Borussia Dortmund added to the excitement surrounding Mbappe’s imminent arrival.
In a brief conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, Mbappe hinted that the deal would be officially announced on Monday night. Real Madrid’s confirmation of the signing marks the end of a dramatic transfer saga that nearly concluded in 2022 before Mbappe opted to renew his contract with PSG for one more year.
Despite being excluded from PSG’s pre-season tour of Japan last summer due to his contract situation, Mbappe returned to the squad and had a stellar final season, scoring 44 goals in all competitions. He led PSG to a seventh Ligue 1 title and reached the Champions League semi-finals, where they were defeated by Dortmund.
Mbappe joins a star-studded Real Madrid squad brimming with talent. The team’s attack will be further bolstered by the presence of Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, and the highly anticipated Brazilian prodigy Endrick. In midfield, Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, Luka Modric, and Aurelien Tchouameni provide a formidable engine room, while the defense is anchored by Thibaut Courtois, Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, and Eder Militao.
As Real Madrid prepare for the upcoming season, they will do so without club legend Toni Kroos, who has announced his retirement plans post-Euro 2024. The addition of Mbappe, however, ensures that Los Blancos remain a force to be reckoned with both domestically and in Europe.
