FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has announced that he will undergo back surgery, sidelining him for approximately three months.
In a heartfelt message addressed to fans, the German international expressed his deep disappointment at not being able to support his teammates during the upcoming stretch of the season. Despite being in strong physical condition, Ter Stegen revealed that ongoing pain has forced him to take the medical team’s advice and opt for surgery as the safest route to a full recovery.
“Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately I am not free from pain,” Ter Stegen said. “After intensive discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, the quickest and safest way for me to fully recover is through back surgery.”
The 32-year-old goalkeeper, who has been a mainstay for Barça since joining in 2014, previously recovered from a similar operation in 66 days. However, doctors have recommended a longer recovery period this time—approximately three months—to avoid any further complications.
While emotionally affected by the setback, Ter Stegen remains optimistic and determined.
“Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear,” he added.
FC Barcelona will now rely on their backup goalkeepers during the crucial months ahead, including domestic league and European competition fixtures. Ter Stegen promised to keep fans updated on his recovery, ending his note with a confident message: “Don’t worry—I’ll be back!”
The club has yet to release an official medical report or confirm the exact date of the surgery, but sources within the team indicate full support for the decision, prioritizing the long-term health of their star goalkeeper.
Fans and teammates alike have flooded social media with messages of support, standing firmly behind Ter Stegen as he begins his road to recovery.
