The football world is in mourning following the tragic death of Portuguese international and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who passed away early this morning in a fatal traffic accident in Spain’s Zamora province. He was 28 years old.

The accident occurred at kilometer 65 of the A-52 motorway near the Sanabria region. According to emergency services and eyewitnesses, the vehicle in which Jota was traveling veered off the road and caught fire, with the flames quickly spreading to surrounding vegetation.

Jota was accompanied by his younger brother, AndrĂ© Jota, a 26-year-old professional footballer for Portuguese side Penafiel.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving distress calls around dawn, but both occupants of the vehicle could not be saved.

Authorities have not yet released an official report on the cause of the crash, but early indications suggest a high-speed impact followed by combustion. Investigations are ongoing.

Diogo Jota joined Liverpool FC in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a €44.7 million deal and quickly became a fan favorite at Anfield. Known for his clinical finishing and relentless energy, Jota made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and assisting 26. He played a crucial role in Liverpool’s recent successes, helping the club secure the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season, as well as FA Cup and League Cup victories in the 2021-22 campaign.

Before his time in England, Jota was signed by Atlético Madrid in 2016 from Paços de Ferreira for €7 million. Though he never made an official appearance for the Spanish side, he impressed during loan spells at FC Porto and later Wolverhampton, where he eventually transferred permanently in 2018.

In Portugal and beyond, Jota was admired not just for his footballing talent but also for his humility and sportsmanship. He earned 37 caps for the Portuguese national team and was part of their squads at the 2022 and 2024 European Championships.

Tributes have poured in from clubs, teammates, fans, and the footballing community worldwide, with Liverpool FC releasing a statement saying:
“We are devastated by the passing of Diogo Jota. A beloved teammate, an incredible footballer, and an even better person. Our thoughts are with his family at this heartbreaking time.”

Jota got married five days ago on June 22, he leaves behind his wife, Rute Cardoso, and their young three children, two sons and a daughter.

The Portuguese Football Federation has announced plans for a moment of silence in all upcoming domestic fixtures, while Liverpool is expected to pay tribute to their fallen star in their next pre-season match.

The football world grieves not only the loss of a brilliant athlete but of a life tragically cut short.
