Habib Iddrisu, the First Deputy Majority Whip in Parliament, has reassured Ghanaians that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs will maintain a disciplined stance when Parliament reconvenes today, November 7, despite ongoing disputes over which party holds the majority status in the House.
This comes after Minority Chief Whip and Adaklu MP, Governs Kwame Agbodza, claimed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus would assume the majority position due to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s recent declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant. Agbodza stated he would attend today’s session as the Majority Chief Whip, solidifying the NDC’s stance.
However, Iddrisu countered Agbodza’s claim, emphasizing that Speaker Bagbin has yet to definitively grant the NDC majority control in Parliament. Iddrisu noted that if the Speaker fails to clarify the NDC’s inability to occupy the majority seats, the NPP caucus would reassess its approach to ensure parliamentary procedures are upheld.
As a member of the NPP and the current MP for Tolon Constituency, Iddrisu has demonstrated his commitment to upholding democratic principles
His background in politics is marked by his service as the Deputy Executive Secretary of Ghana Free Zones Authority in charge of Tema enclave.
Iddrisu also serves as a member of the Ghana National Hajj Board and was appointed to the Board of the Agriculture Development Bank by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in September 2021.
In February 2024, Iddrisu was elevated to the position of First Deputy Majority Chief Whip after some changes to the Majority leadership.
His leadership skills have been recognized, and he received the Most Influential Personality in the Five Regions of the North award from Northern Excellence Awards in 2023.
The situation remains uncertain, with both parties eagerly awaiting the Speaker’s clarification on the majority status. The NPP and NDC are preparing for today’s session, with the majority status still hanging in the balance.
